The Slovak-German translation workshop ViceVersa starts in Kremnica

The town of Kremnica welcomes twelve translators from German and Slovak who will be part of the ViceVersa workshop.

This translation workshop is a project of the TOLEDO program of the German Translation Fund (DÜF), regularly organised in different countries and language combinations. Following the successful Slovak-German edition in the Swiss translation house Looren in 2021, Kremnica will host this particular format from April 29 to May 5.

The main organiser is Goethe Institute Bratislava, in cooperation with Slovak Literary Centre (SLC) and the civic association of literary translators and editors DoSLov, and the Festival of literary translation TRANZ.

Under the guidance of lecturers Ján Jambor (SK) and Mirko Kraetsch (DE), the workshop will be attended by translators from Slovak into German: Stefanie Bose, Marie-Theres Cermann, Zuzana Finger, Eva Profousová, Andrej Zmeček, and from German into Slovak: Veronika Deáková, Milina Svítková, Katarína Széherová, Martina Vannayová, Andrej Zahorák.

Among the titles the participants will work on are contemporary prose texts by Slovak authors (Ivana Gibová, Barbora Hrínová, Nicol Hochholczerová, Katarína Kucbelová, Arpád Soltész), as well as older works (Štefan Žáry). The opposite linguistic direction (German-Slovak) includes authors such as Julie Heiland, Katja Petrowskaja, Carl Spitteler, Lola Randl, Peter Stamm and Stefan Zweig.

In addition to linguistic and interpretative topics, participants will also address questions of cultural exchange, contemporary literary life in Slovakia and in German-speaking countries, and the mediation of the translated works.

Discussions with the author Katarína Kucbelová, the translator Paulína Šedíková Čuhová and the literary scholar Zuzana Bariaková will also complement the rich program. Selected workshop participants will also perform as part of the program of the TRANZ festival in Banská Bystrica on Saturday 4 May at 11:30. The discussion will be moderated by writer and translator Michal Hvorecký.

One of the lecturers of the workshop, Mirko Kraetsch will take part in a panel dedicated to translations of Slovak literature into foreign languages on Saturday 4 May at 14:30. He will be joined by Weronika Gogola, author and translator from Slovak into Polish, and SLC representative, Mária Vargová. Moderated by Zuzana Bariaková.
